The third day of our trip continues our progression up the eastern coast of the North Island starting from Glendhu Station and finishing at Riversdale’s Cape Anderson where the choice of accommodation is canvas or dormitory cabins.

Along the way we pass through Glenburn, Flat Point (it got it’s name from Captain James Cook in 1770 as he circumnavigated the North Island), Caledonia and Homewood stations and cross the Kaiwhata River as well as passing the Honeycomb lighthouse.

Setting up camp at Camp Anderson, Riversdale.

Trip Report Wednesday 17 January 2001

Team C

After a night spent in woolshed, shearers quarters and sheltered sites in the bush, being battered by gale force winds and a lengthy “Bonding Session”, C Team was up at the crack of dawn to prepare themselves to lead the trip for the day. [Rumours of the walrus seen up-river are well founded – Ed.]

We departed Glendhu Station at 8.30 am heading for the coast. After high winds from the day before the ocean swells and breaking surf were spectacular. The route is very scenic and easy going ranging from hills to coastal tracks. Farming varies from coastal run country, forestry and cropping.

We travelled onto Glenburn Station passing a number of batches (cribs for the Southerners), some close to the sea and others in the scrub. Glenburn is a large station with a large number of well-maintained buildings. Stopped for smoko at Honeycomb rock. Some of the more energetic climbed the rock for photos. Next to the rock is a shipwreck from long ago. On to Caledonia Homestead and across very dry farm land, lots of dust and spectacular views. This section of the trip is shorter today, which allows time for people to relax. We arrived at Riversdale at approx. 12:00.
