Smoko break on the way south

Day 10 saw us traveling from Foxton Beach to Upper Hutt via roads, forests and the famous Akatarawa Forest block - it wasn’t an early start either, thank goodness! After a short distance on the main road we turned off and followed the stopbank of the Manawatu River for a while then made our way to the Shannon Forest.

After a very scenic drive through the forest it was back onto the main road down to Paraparaumu and the entrance to the Akatarawa Forest block. This is a very well known forest and four wheel drive destination for club members from the lower North Island. There was a slight delay in accessing the forest due to the fact that the council had changed the locks without advising us, but once the local keyholder unlocked the gate we were off again.

River crossing in the Akatarawas

There was a bit of everything for everyone in the Akatarawas. Some gravel roads, some clay and mud roads, some steep ascents and descents, a few river crossings and even a drive down the valley in the river. Nothing was a major challenge, but it sure would be in inclement weather. We were even fortunate enough to find a few places for the "boys with toys" to have a play.

From here it was a quick trip on the main roads up to our final destination, Harcourt Park Motor camp, for the evening. Some of the Wellington based participants took the chance to head home for the night, and some of the others enjoyed a great Chinese meal in Upper Hutt.

I wonder what they're looking for under the Jeep
of Nick and Tina?
